A Note about Zentangle®

The Zentangle® art form and method was created by Rick Roberts and Maria Thomas and is copyrighted. Zentangle® is a registered trademark of Zentangle, Inc. Learn more at zentangle.com.

I have been asked how Zentangle® differs from doodling. Aside from the fact that doodling for me usually ends up in a mess I wouldn't care to share with anyone, the difference to me is that doodling is mindless, while Zentangle® is mindful.

I use the term Zentangle® to refer to all my "doodling" pattern-making. This is because it is so much easier than saying "Zentangle®-Inspired Art" or something like that. I also want to use the term as a way of paying my respects to Maria Thomas and Rick Roberts for their formalization of the methodology of this "mindful pattern-making". Please do not assume that because I label an entry with Zentangle®, it consists of pure official Zentangle® patterns, or that it is in any way approved by them. Many of the "tangle patterns" I use are ones for which they described the formula for creating the pattern in a manner that anyone can understand. But many are from other sources, some are variations of patterns, and some patterns are my own (or seem to be).
