Early 2017 Sketching

Catching the San Diego SketchCrawlers and Urban Sketchers when I get a chance!

Arboretum in Balboa Park and a Lady Slipper Orchid from inside the arboretum.

Here is another Balboa Park sketch from a lovely early spring day.

I love the San Diego Zoo but the SketchCrawlers were rained out the first 2 months this year. Boo hoo! A quick sketch of Satu the Orangutan leaning up against the glass.

These are detail sketches of a tree near the Sabertooth Grill. The pink flower clusters were about 6 or 7 inches wide. It looked very cool.

Sketches from Urban Sketchers meetings.

Zoo sketches

I love the San Diego Zoo and try to go sketch there now and then - uasually after a Balboa Park sketchcrawl meeting. When I published my last post, I realized I hadn't put any zoo pictures up.
This is Janey, one of the Orangutans at the zoo. She likes to be up near the glass and sometimes will interact with the people watching. Although I stretched out her face too much, I think I captured a bit of her expression.

This is from a seed pod at the zoo - I don't know what kind of tree it came from. There were lots and lots of seeds in the pod and it was quite interesting. I named it the "Sumkinda Pod" in honor of our sketching friend Nikki who is really good at making quick sketches of birds and flowers and giving them funny names.

I always make sure I stop by the flamingoes. It's hard to get a good flamingo color with the toned paper, although probably someone with more experience would have no problem. They seem extra bright this year.

We were by the gorilla exhibit, but there were too many people to even see the gorillas, but I noticed this shoot of giant bamboo (this much of it was probably more than a foot long).

Another time I was at the orangutan exhibit and there were too many people to see much, because the orangutans were quite active. This, of course makes it harder to sketch them, as I am not too swift with the sketching. So, here is a sketch of a tree stump, where I didn't have to worry about it moving to a new position, haha.

The Scripps Aviary is one of my favorite places to watch the birds. When I was there in January, I noticed a bunch of Clivia buds and sketched them.

Today I went to the Galapagos Tortoise exhibit and this guy, Abbott, was in a nice pose but not moving, so I managed a sketch and then added watercolor later. I need to go back and fix the greys, it was hard to tell how much color was there as the toned paper darkened where it was wet, so now it looks a little strange. Also, the dark lines are from an Elegant Writer pen, which is water-soluble and adds the blueness to some areas. It's not very done; perhaps I'll work on it and post it again later.

Thanks for looking at my sketches!

Balboa Park Sketchcrawl

The sketchcrawl group met today at the Rose Garden in Balboa Park. The center of the pergola has some beautiful Clivias blooming, so I sketched them instead of roses (go figure).

Then I wandered around the park for a while. The baby koi in the lily pond are growing really fast. These all are around 5 to 7 inches long, and there were quite a few more in other parts of the pond.
The guy with the snakes was there taking them for a walk. :-) He had one large python, a medium python, and an albino Colombian Red-Tail Boa, which I got to hold for a while.
He was pretty active at first, wiggling all around. He climbed up my arm, over my shoulder and started going down my back inside my shirt! I put a stop to that! After a while, he calmed down, wrapped around my arm and just chilled out.
I recently purchased a Balboa Park Explorer Pass that gets me into any of the museums. I've visited a few, but since I had my sketch things today, I went to the San Diego History Center, where they have a delightful exhibit dedicated to Dr. Seuss. The funniest part is the "Unorthodox Taxidermy" animals that are hysterical.

I had to sketch this "Flaming Herring".

I also like the Mulberry Street Unicorn. I didn't get good pictures of the others, but they are all great, with wonderful expressions.

Spanish Village Detritus

Today was First Friday Extra Credit Sketching at Spanish Village in Balboa Park. I wasn't in the mood for sketching the buildings, so I sketched a couple of seed pods plus a snail I found while looking for more seed pods from the Jacaranda trees.

As I was on the way to Spanish Village, I noticed some flowers with big water droplets in the petals and managed to get a good picture of one of them.

ATC #201 - Lonely Gargoyle

What do gargoyles dream about? Do they miss their buddies? Are they dreaming of days running free, where no one thinks they're ugly?

Day 176 - Fishing Rabbits

I don't really understand this one, although it's very cute. I don't know why rabbits would be fishing, but I'm sure there's some story behind it.

Day 169 - Rabbit Rowing a Dragon Boat

This is one of my favorite matchbox labels although I'm not sure of the symbolism. Rabbits are associated with the moon in Chinese mythology and folktales. Although I think that is really supposed to be the sun; when I see rabbits in Chinese art I automatically think of the moon. Then there is a romantic story that goes with the dragon boat races that are held in early summer (Wikipedia), of an exiled official turned poet who commits suicide in a river. The local people jumped into their boats and raced out to save him but were too late. Because dragons are thought to control water, the boats all have a dragon prow as this boat does. Then there is also the fact that the Dragon year follows the Rabbit year in the Chinese zodiac, so perhaps the rabbit is bringing in the dragon.

Day 166 - Year of the Horse

I made this faux postal in 2002 for the Year of the Horse using rubber stamps and a mask. I was born in a Horse year.

Day 142 - Froggy Wisdom

This is a die-cut from Graphic45 scrapbook papers. I love this scene; it looks like the frog is telling a fascinating story or imparting some very important froggy wisdom that the fairy will forget within the hour.

My blog is featured on Noah Scalin's blog 365: Make Something Everyday and Change Your Life! Thanks, Noah! Of course it happens right when things are falling apart here. This is yesterday's ATC but now it's for day-before-yesterday because the one I made for that day has disappeared! I hate when that happens, and I spent so much time looking for it that I didn't have time to finish today's ATC. Sigh... But I'll catch up - don't worry. And I'll probably find the missing ATC in the morning when I'm in a hurry to leave. :-)

Scrapbook papers, stamped letters.

Day 131 - Monkey Performing the Sambasa Dance

This little cutie is a sumi-e painting in the Pacific Asia Museum. Isn't he grand? I love this painting. Mori Sosen, First Day of the Monkey Year, 1800.

Day 87 - Summer Horse Heaven

We've had beautiful weather lately, warm but not hot. When I was looking through my magazine clippings in the afternoon after being outside watering the yard and enjoying the weather, I found this and thought it seemed like horse heaven in summertime, so here it is!
Collage, label sticker, embellishments.
Note: I forgot to post this on Tuesday (after all this time, how could I *forget* to post?!!). Then last night I thought Blogger was broken so couldn't post either ATC. Turns out that something was messed up in browser, so after clearing browsing data, cookies, and restarting, it's now working again. Sigh..

Day 81 - Cute Bunny

Spent the day at the San Diego County Fair and I'm beat! Today's ATC is of one of the bunnies on display; isn't he just darling? I love to see all the animals. We had perfect weather for the fair (IMO), overcast with low clouds all day so it didn't get hot. I'm so tired I keep falling asleep in the middle of making this card. Time for bed!
Photo, collage.
