Old Sketch of Me

This was a funny blast from the past. I've been cleaning out various parts of the house and came across this sketch my husband did of me from about 10 or 12 years ago when I was learning to crochet. It cracks me up because I look so intense, probably from trying to keep track of the 6 or 7 fingers on each hand!

Sketchcrawl Day and Zoo

The San Diego Weekday Sketchcrawl group met this morning outside the entrance to the San Diego Zoo. I decided to sketch the Bird of Paradise. Of course there were more flowers and way more leaves, but this is what I had time to draw. Stickers from Rachel, thank you!  It was a lovely day, not hot and with a little bit of  a breeze. After that, we rode on the carousel, then I went to the zoo with Trixxie. We sat down in the Koalifornia Boardwalk picnic area to eat lunch and sketched there too.
The stamp on each sketch is the one they have for stamping the back of your hand when you leave the zoo, if you want to come back in the same day.

Cross Structure Book

Saturday was this month's book class at the La Jolla library, taught by Bhavna from the San Diego Book Arts. It was fun to make, and I look forward to filling it up.

Queen Califia's Magical Circle Garden

Today the San Diego Sketchcrawlers met at the Queen Califia's Magical Circle Garden in Kit Carson Park in Escondido. It is really beautiful there, with amazing statues by artist Kiki De St. Phalle decorated with mosaics, stones, glass and shells. One of our members made a video of the group. If you ever have an opportunity to go, you should! It truly is magical! I drew one of the "totem" sculptures; you can see it in the video. I'm not sure I like working on toned paper, but I'm giving it a try.

Here are some detail pictures showing some of the variety of materials used for the statues.

The garden is undergoing some restoration and currently is only open the second Saturday of each month. Our group arranged for a special time to see the garden and have a docent tour.
