Day 115 - Nestling

More bird stuff. The oriole babies have fledged and the birds are drinking a gallon of bird nectar every 5 days. Sheesh! I can hardly keep up. I only have 3 8-oz feeders so I spend a lot of time refilling them.

Day 112 - Live in the Sea

Even though I rarely seem to go to the beach except to take my dog to Fiesta Island, I like the ocean and most ocean critters. I'm more of a tide-pool gal, though. Now I'm going to have to check the tides and go to the tidepools sometime soon. That picture of a crab looks a little too much like a spider for my taste, though.

Day 111 - Another Sketchcrawl Day

The San Diego Sketchcrawlers' Weekday group met this morning in Balboa Park near Marston Point. It's a very nice area with picnic tables and lots of pine trees so it almost feels like you're in the mountains. Stephen Sloan brought his Chalkboard Ukulele (pictured above). It's a ukulele that he painted with chalkboard paint. So of course we had to document our meeting. I decorated the neck, though it's hard to see. I didn't sketch much because I was late due to confusing directions (you know who you are, but I forgive you) and Rachel brought a copy of Artist's Journal Workshop: Creating Your Life in Words and Pictures by Cathy Johnson, which I spent a fair amount of time looking at and will probably buy soon.

Day 109 - Thistle Dance

Way back in the olden days when I lived in Orange County and worked in El Toro/Lake Forest, there was hardly anything along the southern stretch of the 405 freeway. In the spring, wild thistles would grow in a few areas near the freeway. They were really pretty, and attracted flocks of birds when they went to seed.

Day 106 - Lotus Flower

When I lived in Orange County, we used to go to the Lotus Festival in Echo Park, near Dodger Stadium. It was usually the weekend after the 4th of July. The little lake there had lots of lotus, all blooming this time of year. I miss the lotus. Balboa Park has some but it's not the same as having a lake full of them. Hmm, I think a trip to the Asian market is in order; it's got me thinking of the foods I miss.

Day 105 - A Watercolor Day

I took a great watercolor class from Helen Shafer Garcia at the Bravo School of Art. Helen is a great teacher and I learned a lot from the class. This is a picture of one of the paintings I did in the class. In spite of the warped flower, I think it turned out pretty good and I hope to play around more with watercolors. One of these days I will find my little paper cutter so I don't always have such crooked edges. sigh...

Day 104 - Hummingbird Dreams

I think I've mentioned how much I like birds. I have 2 hummingbird feeders that I've rigged up so that the orioles can use them too. At this time of year I use about 1/2 gallon a week of nectar. Soon the baby orioles will fledge and be full-grown and I will be very busy filling the feeders! This year I seem to have more hummingbirds than in the last few years. I feed regular wild bird seed for the finches, doves and towhees, primarily. I also have finch socks with nyjer thistle for the goldfinches. There are not nearly as many goldfinches (we have the Lesser Goldfinches here) as there has been in the past, so that's kind of sad. I have no idea why. The wildfires in 2007 reduced the population somewhat but they seem to be steadily declining in my yard.

Day 103 - Number 6 Goldfish

I'm not sure where I got the cool piece of canvas, but it looks like something I might have gotten in one of the piles of collage fodder from Lisa Bebi. I love the loose threads at the top. I feel this ATC is a little naked, but no matter what I tried to add, nothing looked right, so it's staying like this.

Day 102 - Talk Less, Listen More...

Everyone wants to be heard, but most people don't want to listen. I mean really listen to what the other person is saying, not just waiting for a chance to jump in and talk themselves. So one thing we can all do is to recognize this, take a break from our needing to talk and let the other person be heard. It's not easy, but the reward is a more meaningful conversation.

Day 100 - A Milestone!

100 days! Yay for me! I actually found a small flat stone & wrote on it. Then I had to wait for the glue to dry to take a picture. Today when getting ready to to take the picture, I decided it needed some spiffing up so I added the glitter glue.

Day 95 - Giant Protea

A while back we had a sketchcrawl at the Old Cactus Garden in Balboa Park. It is behind the Puppet Theater and the Balboa Park Club. There is a huge Protea bush (tree?) there that had a number of flowers on it. I took this picture of one of the flowers. It was at least 7 or 8 inches tall - just amazing in size! All the little spiny parts are so perfectly arranged. They aren't sharp "spines" but I'm not sure what to call them!

Day 93 - See the USA!

Happy Independence Day! After a couple of false starts on a red-white-blue theme, I decided to use more of the travel-related stuff for a See the USA theme, but didn't have time to finish yesterday. Of course, only after gluing it together did I come to find out that the White Hart Hotel is not in Lincoln, Nebraska but in the UK. Oops!

Day 90 - Birds, Blue and Otherwise

I love birds. Just seeing them makes me happy. I have nectar feeders for hummingbirds and orioles, seed feeders for lots of other birds, and thistle socks for goldfinches on my back porch. It's so nice to see them feeding and flying around. There are at least 2 pairs of orioles that come to the feeders, so I expect to see lots of fledglings soon.
