Early 2017 Sketching

Catching the San Diego SketchCrawlers and Urban Sketchers when I get a chance!

Arboretum in Balboa Park and a Lady Slipper Orchid from inside the arboretum.

Here is another Balboa Park sketch from a lovely early spring day.

I love the San Diego Zoo but the SketchCrawlers were rained out the first 2 months this year. Boo hoo! A quick sketch of Satu the Orangutan leaning up against the glass.

These are detail sketches of a tree near the Sabertooth Grill. The pink flower clusters were about 6 or 7 inches wide. It looked very cool.

Sketches from Urban Sketchers meetings.

ATC #220 - Beach & King Pelican

I got to go on a real vacation with a friend to a timeshare in Newport Beach near Crystal Cove. It was really lovely and inspired me to make a couple of beach-themed cards. It also gave me the opportunity of using some more of the cool washi tape I recently got.

Watercolor background, Washi tape, cutouts, gold marker.

ATC #205 - Warm Seas

More painting experiments. I believe this background card was from a class with Chris Cozen where we were practicing blending. The colors reminded me of a tropical sea. I added the bubbles. This is in the top 10 of my favorite ATCs I've made.
Painted paper, ink, collage.

ATC #202 - Undersea Post

I have a bunch of these faux postals that are printed on transparent sticker paper. They look very interesting when pasted over colored backgrounds.
Scrapbook paper, faux postal stickers.

Day 178 - Sailing Fleet

This matchbox label has very stylized ships and waves. I really like the way this one looks. Although they don't exactly look like fishing ships, I threw in the fish anyway. The background paper is lovely Japanese washi/yuzen paper.

Day 177 - Crane Reaches the Shore

The crane, a symbol of longevity and fidelity, reaches land after a long migration. The background is really cool texture from a stamp I just got that makes me think of waves, water and wind.
Matchbox label, embellishments.

Day 148 - Floating Ideas

Sometimes it seems like all my ideas float away on a tide of confusion.

Day 138 - Tourist Urchin

I like the faux postal collage sets I downloaded from Artchix Studios because I can print them on whatever I want. I printed out some of them on clear label paper, which can be fun. This Urchin Post is traveling Tourist Class. Where might he be going?

Day 112 - Live in the Sea

Even though I rarely seem to go to the beach except to take my dog to Fiesta Island, I like the ocean and most ocean critters. I'm more of a tide-pool gal, though. Now I'm going to have to check the tides and go to the tidepools sometime soon. That picture of a crab looks a little too much like a spider for my taste, though.
